WHY DO I BREED FOR WORKING ABILITIES?

At Vom Bösen Blick Rottweilers, I'm a strong believer in Rottweilers that still look and more importantly act like Rottweilers. I strive to breed for dogs that have strong drives for the work. I look for full and hard gripping style, strong drive for obedience and overall work ethic. I try to accomplish this without sacrificing health OR conformation.

Unlike many people who claim to breed for working drives, I spend 3-5 days a week training for schutzhund. I am a member of the Inland Empire Rottweiler Club locally, as well as a number of national Schutzhund organizations. I know what it takes for a dog to make it in schutzhund so I try to breed with the competitor in mind. I utilize bloodlines I know closely and who have a history of working abilities. First and foremost...I strive to breed a dog I can compete with on the working field. If its pretty on top of that, then I've done my job as a breeder.

In my opinion, the Rottweiler breed is at a cross roads for its working abilities. The breed survived the early 90's surge in popularity and has found itself the breed of choice for hobby show handlers. Sieger Shows around the country draw entries of 100+ Rottweilers. Meanwhile, we see the number of Rottweilers attaining working titles at high levels to be dwindling. Gone seem to be the days of famous dogs like Langhoffens Fax (Rottweiler FCI Competitior), Hark vom Hause Anin (Winner USA Nationals), Arco vom Weidenbruch and many others.. Many of the old-time Rottweiler handlers seem to have made the switch to other breeds such as the Belgian Malinois or German Shepherd. Although many of the handlers have chosen to compete with other breeds, many still have a fondness for the Rotweiler breed and keep one hanging around the house as a pet.

The number of Working Rottweiler Kennels can be counted on one hand. Most breeders strive for a balance of both, with emphasis put on the looks of the breed. As someone who came from the AKC show world, I most certainly have appreciation for a Rottweiler that LOOKS like a Rottweiler. However, I am not willing to let the working Rottweiler become extinct.

My philosophy at ths point is to strive to produce a Rottweiler with high drive and strong working ablities. Each dog is trained and tested so its abilities are proven. Our primary sport of choice is Schutzhund, however, we have dabbled in and will continue to dabble our dogs in other sports such as French Ring, AKC Obedience, Herding, Dock Diving, etc.

Unlike many breeders who make claims as to why their dogs aren't titled, or why they don't have time to compete with their dogs, it is Vom Bosen Blick's goal to continue to handler-owner-train all of our dogs. NO dogs are ever sent away for titles. We try to post videos so you can see our dogs abilities and would love to answer any questions you may have about our dogs. Our dogs are not perfect but hopefully we will improve with each successive generation. As time goes on we hope to add more articles explaining the working abilities of the Rottweiler and more videos to show what our dogs are capable of
